EU Joint Ammunition Procurement

EU ministers will meet today in Stockholm to decide whether to  jointly procure  ammunition to aid Ukraine and replenish domestic stockpiles. EU defence ministers will informally discuss plans to speed up the supply of ammunition to Ukraine, which is seeking more ammunition to fight Russia’s invasion. NATO’s Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg and EU’s Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton are also expected to attend.

Last week, EU’s chief diplomat Josep Borrell proposed the use an additional €1 billion to boost ammunition production in Europe plan to address existing shortfalls, boost ammunition production across the bloc, and support replenishing member states’  stocks, and yesterday the Gaurdian reported on leaked documents showing the preparation of a a large order ammunition, with only EU and Norwegian manufacturers able to take advantage. Britain’s defence industry is purportedly to be blocked from profiting from the EU’s  increase in spending on arms.

Estimates suggest that Ukrainian forces use up 6000-7,000 artillery shells daily, around a third of Russia’s total one year into the war.
